Thrilling Audiences From the Start!

The creative dynamic-duo over at Hungry Eyes Film and Television, Sudz Sutherland and Jennifer Holness (the multi-award winners who brought us Home Again and Guns), is about to win awards again, with their new series Shoot the Messenger. Produced in partnership with CBC and ITV, this 8-episode first season stars some amazing actors and the storyline has already captured new fans who cannot wait for a second season.

“We’re extremely excited to be working with the CBC and ITV on #SM and deeply appreciate the support the CBC has shown us over the years,” commented Holness. “#ShootMessenger is an ambitious show that deals with challenging issues and we couldn’t do it without the staunch support of our partners. It is going to be a fast paced, atmospheric drama that is driven by contemporary urban issues in media, policing, and politics.”

The series premiered on October 10, 2016, and quickly rose to the top of the crop. This is a classic thriller about the thin, and often delicate, line between the lives of politicians, criminals, and the investigative journalists that dig into their lives behind closed doors. Daisy Channing is the far-from-perfect journalist who quickly finds out how messy life can get when she not only witnesses a murder, but gets sucked into the nasty politics behind major corporations and their involvement in so-called gang activity.

Ambiguity is also a main theme in #SM, as Daisy’s editor Mary, her co-worker Simon, and the head detective of homicide Frank Lutz (Daisy’s secret lover) all get wrapped up in the dizzying mystery as it unravels before them, blurring the definition of what is considered personal and private in this technological era of social media connections.

The stellar stars of this thrilling series are Elyse Levesque (Cedar Cove) as Daisy Channing; Alex Kingston (Bukowski, Doctor Who, ER) as Mary Fowler, Daisy’s editor; Lucas Bryant (The Girl King, Haven) as Simon Olendski, Daisy’s co-worker; and Lyriq Bent (Book of Negroes) as Frank Lutz, the homicide detective. There are a huge amount of recognizable extras and guest stars filling up the alternate Toronto universe that Sutherland and Holness created, setting the stage for this incredible series.

IMDb voters rank the series at 6.4 out of 10 with almost 650 votes cast. Despite a seemingly low score, viewers have mostly positive comments. They applaud the suspenseful script, stating that the story is compelling without giving away all the details. The female lead seems to have captured viewers completely, as they mention she is not only a compelling character, but she is sexy and imperfect, a winning combination for a protagonist wrapped up in a mystery.

“We’re thrilled with the young, exciting cast that have boarded the show. Elyse Levesque has demonstrated incredible charisma in her past projects – she’s like a magnet on camera,” Sutherland said about their star actress. “#ShootMessenger audiences are going to be introduced to her impressive dramatic range and vulnerability that really connects to the viewer – she also brings a sharp intelligence which was absolutely required for this material.”

There haven’t been any official announcements from the production studio or CBC about the potential of a second season, and it really depends upon the show’s creative writers as to whether they wish to continue the storyline. If fans had the final say, there would definitely be a second, and probably third season at the very least.

New episodes of SM air on Monday nights at 9pm on CBC, and are also available to watch on the CBC.ca website.
