New Girl is a much beloved Fox sitcom now in the middle of its 6th season. In the vein of Friends and How I Met Your Mother, the series revolves around the co-existence of a group of white 30-something friends dealing with the typical young adult lifestyle of developed countries. In other words, they are trying to get their footing in their romantic and professional lives and are still, into their mid-30’s, living huddled together in an apartment. As most readers are probably well aware, the core characters are composed of the new girl Jess, her best friend Cece; and the three guys juxtaposed to the “new girl”, Schmidt, Nick; and a token African-American fifth wheel slot variably filled by “Coach” or “Winston”.

The fifth season was a major turning point for the primetime comedy, witnessing Schmidt and Cece tie the knot after a four-year simmering of sexual tension. Season six is the continuation of this, shifting focus away from the main character, Jess, and onto the life of the newlyweds. It sees the couple involved in house-hunting and designing. Jess continues to brook the waves of romance as she rides old feelings for Nick and shares some sultry chemistry with a one-time character Robby. Winston is the current minority presence for this season, having displaced Coach, and also has some rushed-in sexual subplot with his co-worker on the police force, Aly. That’s not to say the subplot is unpopular. Various YouTube homages and fanfictions have been created as panegyrics for this relationship just as others on the show.

Upon release in 2011, #NG was a stunning success in terms of perceived quality, both with critics and viewers. The group’s awkward but charming behavior, exemplified by Jess who is perceived as spunky but naïve, along with the strong identification people had with their lives as 30-somethings in a metropolitan area made it appealing to the internet audience. Critics loved the refreshingly goofy behavior of the protagonists, the acting skills of the cast, and the strength of the writing.

To this day, NG is still beloved on the internet. It has a 7.7 out of 10 on Metacritic, and similar ratings on IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes from users. Critics are not unkind to it either. With a 66/100 on Metacritic and a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s hard to think of a Fox series with a greater level of professional support.

Yet the series may be winding down. The first seasons were ratings powerhouses with viewers frequently above five million in numbers. In raw figures, season 6 is the weakest performance of the show in terms of audience size. Few of the episodes in the current season have made it above the surface of two million viewers. This may not be acceptable for an 8:00 PM Tuesday slot. Perhaps the marriage of Cece and Schmidt and the introduction of Megan Fox as Reagan were instances of shark jumping that have not paid off. The time for a grand finale may be approaching soon.

Season 7 hasn’t been announced yet, but it is assumed to be a sure thing as Megan Fox has already made plans to return to it more wholeheartedly (she had been absent due to her real life pregnancy). It seems the show
