This series has been going since 2013, and airs on Oprah Winfrey’s successful OWN network. The first episode aired on May 29th that year, and now has four seasons under its belt, the most recent ending last month. It had run 22 episodes in total, going all the way back to the beginning of the year. There isn’t any word on the possibility of a 5th season but we’re holding out hope.
The show is written and produced by the household name in entertainment, the inimitable Tyler Perry. It follows the owner of a diner Hattie Mae Love and her family. It’s a ‘black’ comedy, aimed at black audiences but its success has probably seen it resonate with people outside of that demographic.
With the fourth season which premiered in January this year, it moved to a more interesting Friday night 9pm slot. The ratings weren’t as good as previous seasons, but they still made the series one of the network’s most watched, and a fifth season should hopefully be on the cards. What follows is a quick recap of the series and its cast.
The show takes place in and around the diner that Grandma Hattie runs with her brother-in-law Floyd. Patrice Lovely plays Hattie, with Palmer Williams Junior as her brother-in-law. Other main members of the cast include Andre Hall, Jonathon Chase, Kendra C. Johnson and Darmirra Brunson.
The comedy element comes in with Hattie’s old-fashioned but loving nature, always trying to keep her family in line while not annoying them too much. Her daughter is back and forth from her apartment, with her on and off husband in her other home. Danny, her son, moves back to the house after graduation. Sparks fly at times and Hattie finds herself having to deal with the new generation that lives very differently to her own younger days. She starts off by kicking them out of the house. There’s plenty comedic value and a lot of heart-warming feel-good fuzzy stuff too.
It has a great cast and plenty going for it. OWN has not announced anything official for a fifth season, yet. The ratings have slowly declined according to some reports but there is still plenty scope to turn the show round. Some reports have also said that when the show was renewed for a fourth season last year, it was also renewed for additional seasons afterwards, meaning the paperwork has already been done and production might even have already started. This remains to be seen though.
There’s still plenty time as the seasons start in January, which leaves us three months to find out if we will be seeing more from Grandma Hattie and the gang. Expect a split season if there is one, starting in the beginning of the year and pausing for a spring break, before resuming in June or July, as has been the case in the last three seasons.
Tyler Perry’s eponymously named studio is the production studio responsible for the show, with Perry and Ozzie Areu serving as producers. The show runs for 30 minutes and there have been 96 episodes so far, spread out over four seasons.
