Courtney B. Vance has been cast in ABC’s new comedy Libby & Malcome. Created by Kenya Barris and Vijal Patel, the political family comedy will be a bit different than other programs on television. It will also be a departure for the usual serious roles that Vance takes. Felicity Huffman is also starring in the series, and Vance will play her husband.
Vance is a hot actor, and is still smoking after his best actor Emmy for the role of Johnnie Cochran. The new show will be about a married couple named Malcolm and Libby who are on complete opposite sides politically but still in love. Their families have to meet in the middle, often with different viewpoints and beliefs. This of course leads to hilarity on many levels as the blended family tries to get along without ruffling each other’s feathers.
Filling in the role of Malcolm Black, Vance will be a liberal father of three that doesn’t mince his words. His rough exterior is downplayed a bit by his charisma, something that makes his truth bombs hurt just a little bit more. Huffman will play Libby, a Republican that is brilliant and always goes after what she wants. Not only is there a war going on in their household, but they work together on a brand new political talk show. How much can they separate their work lives from their crazy home lives?
Once again, this is a bit of a departure from the usual cardboard cutout ABC comedy. The show sounds intriguing, but is probably going to go the way of the dodo if it doesn’t get proper backing. Anything with Vance and Huffman in it should be gold, so let’s hope that ABC does a good job with the marketing.
How many seasons will the show last on ABC? How should they market it?
