Popular soap opera EastEnders is currently in its 2016 season on BBC One. This beloved show is set in the fictional Victorian square Albert Square in the fictional London Borough of Walford. The show covers the various issues and trials of the different people in the community, who may conflict with each other, but also are known to pull together in times of need. Characters are often switched in and out to keep things fresh, but the basic premise has always stayed the same.
Some of the major plot points in this current season include the community recovering after Paul’s death, especially those closest to him as they try to find some sort of justice. Steven is also trying to pull out all the stops to keep Jane from knowing the truth, but he doesn’t realize that he already may be too late. Perhaps the most shocking development so far, though, is Pam and Les leaving the East End, with the characters being retired from the show in an emotional departure. Do you think the show will be the same without Pam and Les? Do you think that they got a decent send-off?
@EastEnders has earned both praise as well as controversy for its portrayal of issues that many may see as taboo in British social and cultural life. This focus on realism, combined with appealing characters and the common themes of relationships and strong families, has made @EastEnders a ratings juggernaut for much of its run. While other soap operas may struggle with holding their viewership for so long, #EastEnders has not had that issue, with the average audience share for an episode around 30% as of 2013.
The show has also earned much critical acclaim, having nine BAFTA Awards and the Inside Soap Award for Best Soap for 14 years running (from 1997 to 2012), as well as twelve National Television Awards for Most Popular Serial Drama and 11 awards for Best Soap at the British Soap Awards. This doesn’t even cover all the awards the show has won.
Being such a rousing success in viewership, as well as a cultural staple of British television, we will likely be seeing another season of #EastEnders in 2017. Soap operas are often an easy genre to keep going once they are established, as the natural ensemble cast means that it is easier to cycle characters in and out to keep things fresh. In addition, the addictive nature of their episodes means that the audiences often become baked in with time. Having started in 1985, the audience for EastEnders is already well established. While we don’t know when the 2017 season will begin yet, it is likely that we will hear more about
