Don’t Be Tardy (originally as Don’t Be Tardy for the Wedding) is a reality series that premiered on April 26, 2012, on Bravo. The Real Housewives of Atlanta had given birth to its first sub-show, although this wasn’t the first spin-off show from a Real Housewives franchise. Don’t Be Tardy documents the day-to-day drama of the modern-day Brady Bunch. Here’s a story of the lovely Kim Zolciak, who was bringing up two very lovely girls… here’s a story of a man named Kroy Biermann, who got busy and had another four kids with his lady… That’s the way they became the Biermann-Zolciak bunch.
The first season featured the couple as they prepared for their wedding, with the big wedding day being the finale. In November 2012 the series dropped the wedding-specific part of its title and Don’t Be Tardy received a renewed for season two.
Kim met Kroy in 2010 in Atlanta at a charity event. They knew that it was much more than a hunch, and they formed a family. The couple has produced four children, two of whom are twins, and they all live in a huge 17,000 square-foot estate (complete with a staff to maintain it) along with Kim’s two teenagers from previous relationships (Kroy has adopted them). The series chronicles life in their chaotic household.
The show has an IMDb rating of 4.6 out of 10, which is average for a reality series, and viewers seem to enjoy the show, especially if they were already fans of The Real Housewives of Atlanta. There are the same critical reviews for this series as for any of the voyeuristic Housewives shows, but one positive viewer expressed happiness for Kim and her daughters and a general liking of the drama, with particular enjoyment from watching people make fools of themselves.
This current season is all about Kim and Kroy’s fertility, as Kim really wants more children and Kroy has already had a vasectomy (which can be reversed). Kim’s OBGYN tells her she can freeze her eggs and Kroy can freeze his sperm so that they can make more offspring sometime in the future (another season perhaps?). Kim’s older daughters chime in, one doesn’t want any more siblings, the other offers to carry her parents’ baby to test-drive being pregnant and see whether or not she likes childbirth.
The fifth season debuted September 14, 2016, and came in at number 11 on the Top 50 Original Cable list at a 0.57 demo rating with 1.23 million viewers tuning in to see the 38-year-old Kim Zolciak making a comeback following her 2015 stroke and heart surgery that halted her stint on Dancing With the Stars.
The following week viewership numbers dropped dramatically, down to 731,000, rising only slightly the week after that to 811,000 viewers on its third episode. Despite the temporary setback for season 5, overall the Bravo series is up a huge 45% season over season in total viewers, year to date. Season 6 is most certainly on the books for this ever-popular Real Housewives Atlanta spin-off.
Don’t Be Tardy airs on Bravo Wednesdays at 10pm ET. It also is streaming on iTunes and Amazon.
